Summer Camp

Each year Troop 280 takes an extended weeklong summer camping trip, affording scouts the opportunity to interact with other scouts from around the country.  There are several types of programs for scouts at summer camp depending on their rank, age, & goals.

  • First Year Programs – Summer camp usually has a “first year scout” program that offers young scouts with lower or no rank a “fast track” for rank advancements.  Youth that participate in this program will usually earn Scout rank and portions of Tenderfoot and Second-Class ranks.  This program is recommended for all first-time summer camp scouts.

  • Merit Badge Programs - Summer camp is a great opportunity for youth to earn multiple merit badges within a week, though some merit badges may not be completed during the week due to additional requirements to be completed at home.  The number and types of merit badges offered at summer camp vary and will be communicated prior to camp.  Merit badges are recommended for all scouts.

  • High Adventure - Youth who are ready for a challenge may elect to participate in a High Adventure option while at summer camp.  Most camps have a minimum age of 14 to participate in this program.  Activities often include hiking treks, whitewater rafting, climbing, ATV, etc.  An additional fee for these programs will be communicated prior to summer camp.  High adventures are recommended for older scouts.

Logistics/Specifics - We target the next to last week of June for summer camp, but exact dates vary depending on the availability of the camp chosen.  We usually depart on Saturday and return on Saturday and have attended camps in Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia.  The location is selected in October/November of the prior year, and camp card sales and other fundraisers can be used to offset the cost of camp. The total cost for summer camp is approximately $550 and includes camp fees, activities, transportation, and meals during travel days. Usually, a deposit is required in January with additional payments due in March and April.
